New Powerstroke Owner. Mileage???

I just bought my first diesel and ford at the same time. 2006 4x4 f350 with single rear wheels 373 gears. Everyone told me I would get 17 mpg unloaded and 12 towing. Not my truck. I average without load 13.5. When towing my boat ( 26' Twin Vee around 8000lbs full of fuel and geat) my truck got 8.2 mpg on the interstate running 70 mph with the cruise on. Is this typical, or is something wrong? Other than my fuel mileage expectations, the truck is great.

your milage expectations could be a little high, but are not that far off.....drop her down to 65 on the hiway, and that could be worth a couple miles per gallon, but the other thing is there is a "learning curve" for the computer to go through, and your milage should improve with time and driving........dont give up on the milage yet, wait till she has 10-15k before you can really give a milage reading that is consistant. the other thing you really need to look at is if you give it any kind of warm up time in the morning, that is absolutely killer on your fuel economy, but is nice to the motor, and driver..........Marc

Thanks for the information. I let the truck warm up. I live in Florida, so not much warming required. As for running 65, I would get run over on I-95. I have 6000 miles on the truck and really expected my towing mileage to be better. The 8.2 mpg was all interstate with cruise on 70. I got that with my Chevy gas. The diesel was a lot of money for no better mileage. Right now, I am feeling like I threw away $4,800.00. Hope I change my mind.

mileage

SMile do not feel alone I am in the same boat but my boat is doing better than yours.

I pulled for the first time 550 miles thru the mountain and got 10.5 mpg. In the flats of Ohio I got 12, I was pulling just under 10,000 lbs 5er 65 mph in Ohio and 70 in the mountains of kentucky and Tennessee.

I expected to get 17 all around and 12-13 towing.

My 2006 F250 build date 10/05. I now have 2950 miles. I waited till I had 2,000 miles before I pulled and babied it those 2,000 miles.

hey rrbgtt welcome to the forum! I've heard many of people getting not so good mileage the the first several thousand miles with their diesels when they are bought new, not just the PSD's. So just relax and give it some time. Believe it or not, you could see a pretty impressive gain alone by getting a complete turbo-back exhaust kit. It'll help mileage, power, egt's and get rid of the heat quicker which will help your turbo out quite a bit and probably extend it's life. Plus it is not a modification that can do any damage to your engine or transmission or anything on your truck. The worst damage it does is to your wallet...about 400+ depending on what you get for it. But it's a cheap and common diesel engine mod and very well worth it.
