Anyone had to repair the under hood insulation? Got a small tear after blowing the intercooler pipe and want to try to repair it versus replacing for $250.
I've never really thought about it until now - what purpose is it supposed to serve? There's more than enough heat under the hood without keeping it in with insulation!! Or is supposed to be a noise dampener?
Insulation removal may be in my future ... although, I suppose up here in the great white north, in the middle of winter, I may actually want it there??
I installed a hood liner in my truck and the fit is tight with the 6.0 which was why Ford quit doing it. Had to modify it for alternator because it will close off top vents of it.
If you want to repair it right you need some liquid rubber (liquid tape) and get it in black. lol
You can cut it as needed then brush it on where needed. I also shot mine with rubberized undercoating to make it look new.
It will lower engine noise in the cab, mainly what comes through the windshield.
That will do you, I know Lowes carries the stuff for dipping tools and wire connections.
Good Luck with it.
There is noise reduction with the hood liner in place. Not a big drop in dB level but there is a drop. At one time I was testing the noise level inside my truck with my dB meter when I was going through the soundproofing installation. I forget the the value anymore but it does make for some improvement.
I went Ape$hit on soundproofing my truck I have over 400lbs of Dynamat along with 1" foam rubber inside the doors and under door panels. Even put put aluminum faced 1" foam rubber under the cab and in engine compartment on firewall. You literally cannot hear a engine running in my truck at any speed. Can hear it with heavy throttle input but not enough to tell its a Diesel engine under the hood.
Can probably hear a pin drop if I had a tile floor instead of carpet.
I would fix what you have, it also reduces the heat the hood has to deal with too. I would look at it and make sure it's not sitting on your alt tho. May only be a issue with a aftermarket alt but I can't remember if it covered my OEM one or not ?
You can also glue tears with a cyno-acrylic glue too, then seal it up with liquid rubber or undercoating.
Good Luck with it.
I was debating taking mine out or not. only reason
I kept it so long is just in case a pipe blows off it will have cushion to hit and not dent the hood.
I guess I should mention the main reason I removed mine is it was defeating the purpose of my cowl induction hood, but I wasn't at all concerned with noise. Hell I have the windows down 95% of the time.
2002 was the year that Ford was the most aggressive with NVH abatement, then '03 was the start in cost reduction.
The '02 trucks had the underhood blanket, another insulation pad that went over the area of the vacuum pump (I have one of those), the driver's firewall area had the "Excursion" insulator pad carried over, a different level of insulation in the ceiling panel, and I believe some additional skins under the door panels.
The '03's started the great cost reductions, some trim levels lost the hood insulation, Excursion add ons went away, glovebox light and door lights went away on the Lariet, I believe the extra light in the pass sun visor, harness no longer has all the connections that the Lariet had, like the OH Console wiring at the pass footwell, and a few other things in the cabs. '05 saw another level of cost reductions.
My 03 had one my 05 doesn't and I haven't noticed an increase in noise at all. Then again I bought a diesel so I wanna hear the 6.0 purr anyways lol
