I Want Your Opinion (I think )
2005 F250 6.0
I bought a S&B CAI, Banks Monster Exhaust, and Superchips Cortex. My main motivation was to achieve greater fuel economy. Secondary was better performance pulling my boat and horse trailer. I have read thousands of threads touting certain tuners, CAI, and exhaust systems and most seem to be biased based on sponsors and/or personal preference for brand loyalty. I am asking for honest feedback on the combination I have chosen. Be honest, and unbiased. I am thick skinned, so let 'er rip. If you think it is a good choice, let me know...and why. Recognize I had about a $1300 budget. Thanks folks! |

I'll bite. I chose MBRP over banks because of price. I have also had a shop diesel exhaust, which I chose because of price. From what I have heard S&B is a pretty decent intake, I bought AFE because it happened to be on sale when I was looking. But, from what I have been told the stock unit is fine for up to something like 500hp(dont hold me to that, I just know its way up there). And the tuner...I vote SCT, and bought the same for the reliability, and tune-ability. You can have tunes custom made for you, your needs, and your mods. I have no brand or bias to sponsors because 99% of my mods were bought before I was a member. My suggestion, lose the superchips and get an SCT. There are a few different people tuning them now so search them.

I did the Superchips thing first and right at 30 days I returned it and traded for the SCT..............man what a REAL difference. All the way around, fuel, pulling, shifting and of course faster.
I did the Airaid CAI and wish I hadn't now. Didn't hurt a thing just wish I would have saved/spent that money somewhere else. Exhaust, I went with an aluminized 4" turbo back. If I had to do it over again I would retain the stock downpipe and gone 4" straight piped from there. I lost some lowend due to the 4" downpipe. Not much, but enough to notice. |

The superchips isn't a bad tuner, but it's just not the best. I prefer SCT, even for modest needs such as yours because of the tranny tuning and the ability in custom tunes to disable the EGR valve. The stock intake is plenty good enough for someone wanting straight up reliability (NOTHING filters air better) and I would have chosen magnaflow, MBRP, or just about any other brand of exhaust than Banks simply based on price. Exhaust is basically exhaust. Get the cheapest one that meets your needs.
All that being said, I think you have a decent package put together that should make you pretty happy... |

Hey guys, thanks for the input. All this gear is my initial plunge into the diesel performance pool. As I have learned, this addiction could put me in the poor house if I let it get away from me. Between my daughters horse and my bass fishin' habits, I am lucky to afford this. I have been runnin' this F250 for about three years stock and it is an extremely fine sled. I just want to get the most out of it without blowin' it up. I looked hard at the SCT, and after the custom tune it was about $100 more that the SC. I'll give it about four or five tanks to determine if I need to make a change.
I am also looking at the possibility of performaing the "Zoodad" mod. Any input on the benefits of this procedure? Oh, and Choctaw...nice romp over Fossil Ridge. Go Smithson Valley!!! |

I agree with Kurt (shu) The cortex is an ok tuner and will work. However the SCT with custom tuning is much better. The ablity to disable the EGR system is a must with the 6.0 SCT and I believe the PHP Gryphon are the only tuners out to the public that can do that at this point. The PHP unit is another great choice. Since it also has custom tuning very similar to the SCT stuff.

M vote is sct, even the canned tunes on the sct are better than super chips... the ability to adjust trans and firmness will increase your towing drivability. As for air intakes and exhaust, for what you plan on doing they all will work for you.... its just a matter of which one do you want and how much money do you want to spend
