If you're talking about a "kettle whistle" when driving, especially when pulling under load, then no it's not supposed to do that. Are you puking coolant out of the bottle?
You can by a test kit that test's for combustion gasses in the cooling system, you can get a inexpensive one for around fourty bucks. this would be a good place to start. mild HG leaks are tricky though. if your EGR cooler is still there, it could be leaking as well-hopefully. the degas bottle needs room for expansion, so make sure the level is correct, and the cap vent is working properly.
there are some difinitive test's, but I would start with the combustions gas check first.
