So, my 2003 f350 fuel gauge is acting up. Before my last fuel up i was at about 1/8 tank left when the needle suddenly jumped up and read 1/2. Not knowing exactly how much fuel i had left, i filled it up. I got back into my truck and started it, the needle went back up to 1/2 for a couple seconds then dropped to zero. And I'm not talking about it reading empty, it went all the way down to where it rests when the truck is off. After about 30 minutes of driving it finally jumped up to read full.
I've driven about 350 miles this weekend and it currently reads just over 1/2. I'm almost certain that isn't a correct reading.
Is this my fuel level sender in the tank that has gone bad or something else?
Check the wiring going to the fuel tank. It's either a break in the wire going to tank sender or it's the fuel level sender itself. If the truck is left with little to no fuel most of the time the sender will rust and corrode.
If it is the sender you can most likely clean it with a fine brass brush and some 800-1000 sandpaper on the variable resistance contact board.
You don't want to buy a new one, Ford wants $350.00 for a new fuel tank sending unit. Not kidding either.
Check out what you have. Will need a large strap wrench to unscrew the plastic round nut that's holding tank sender and fuel pickup.
Mine does this when it get dirty. Fuel additives usually clean it up somehow and make it work flawlessly. When I dont use them for a few tanks my will do almost the exact same thing. Low fuel warning comes on the whole nine yards. Then boom, it fixes itself. Fuel additives seem to help this alotl.
Thanks for the response guys. I will drop my tank this week since it's almost empty and try cleaning the contacts. I did read another post about cleaning it. Thanks again.

That's a fix men.
See the pictures below and note that the scale is exactly the same unit Fit Form and Function.

I received the new unit, swapped float swing arms, pulled the plastic piece of the new metal and clipped it directly on to the old piece soldered to the tube. I made new wire connections and installed. All at the astonishing price of $40.00 U.S.
Announcing Suthern1 Fuel sending unit repair 199.99 .... lol
The part # is Motorcraft PS90 or there is a W number also Ill find again and post later.
It is said to fit a 2001 Lincoln continental.

And just FYI a metal coat hanger is the exact diameter as the float rod if needed. (don't use the white painted ones)[/quote]
Pulled this post from the 7.3 section. This should fit your sending unit. Why clean it when you can replace it for $40
Looks different then mine looked. The float is definitely wrong not sure if the resistance will match. Good find though Ford beats you down for them. I was going to replace mine for good measure until I heard the price.
It may work?? You will have to get that to fit your draw pipe gauge setup for sure. If it doesn't clip on its not going to work.
When I had mine apart the float pops off. So your really after just the rheostat. I haven't messed with a 6.0 to know if the ohms are right. I don't think ford would of changed it from the 7.3 to the 6.0.
Pretty sure mine is 36 gallon. I still have a good bit of fuel left at 400 miles.
