Hi Guys. Im currently running 175/30 injectors with a powermax turbo. i feel like the powermax lags quite a bit and dies out up top. i was looking at the KC stage 2 turbo. Anyone have any review on this turbo? Charlie is a solid guy and has been more than helpful, but i would like real world experiance. I would like to cool EGT's better and possiably gain some low end. Any ideas?
I can see why. He's a solid guy. i just wanna see what results all the people that are running the stage 2. I havent ruled out MTW or Barter. KC seems more affordiable im just not sure if i will notice an improvment over my pmax.
I run Holders 175/30s and a KC Turbos stage 2 with WPE White Rain tune. All I can say is Wow! Spools quick off the line and even if I'm under the turbo and I get on the skinny pedal it spools fast enough to break the tires loose. IMHO you cannot go wrong with this combination.
This is what was hoping to hear. i am not impressed with the powermax and have heard nothing but good things on the KC turbo. May i ask what your egts average crusing around town and on the freeway?
I'm running white rain tune and love it for daily street driving but It's not the fastest and kinda lags too end
(I know Nate explained it's not meant to be a "fastest" tune)
Then I have a gearhead tune that is really laggy down low but picks it up top but then it locks up to 5th gear way too soon.
Lol so I'm in search of another tune if anyone has any good ones let me hear your opinions
I have the same set up as you, I run tsd spd mpd tunes with modded shift points and he made it were my tow haul button if you push it kick out of overdrive.
I have stock injectors, went from a powermax with billet wheel to a kc stage 2 over a year ago. The Kc stage 2 fix the small laggy spots the powermax had, I think it pulls harder up top. You get Charlie customer service with it to.
My shift point are higher rpm keeping the turbo spool up, when I push my tow haul button it shift and hold it out of over drive, I'm at 6000ft and tow up to 10000ft a lot. There sometimes when I hit a hill I want to hold out of over drive so I just push the button. Tsd the one who did for me. My 2003 does it at will
I was running White Noise but it is a bit too smokey so I loaded White Rain and it's a good tune except when the truck is accelerating the trans goes into 6th and almost immediately it sounds like it is down shifting (the RPMs go up but the my shift indicator still shows 6th) and then it sounds like it up shifting; it's very annoying. So I think it is the converter locking up and then immediately unlocking. The shifting on the White Noise is spot on without any of same behavior as White Rain.
Said it many times, White Rain is awesome, has the most down low, fast spooling power, and incredible fuel mileage. It does fall off mid to high rpm but for daily driving it is great. But the trans tuning sucks (at least for me and my truck). Nate seems like a good guy but he's kinda like Tony Wildman, customer service leaves much to be desired.
I like TSD SPD but got poor fuel mileage and some crazy trans issue supposedly only guys with adjustable pedals get so I can't use it.
PHP tunes overall are the best I have. Trans tuning is perfect, make lots of power throughout the rpm's, decent fuel mileage, incredible customer service. Not the fastest spooling tune but I would love to see how it does with a FICM tuner.
Do any of you tow heavy with this combination? I've got a buddy of mine who is considering some injector/turbo upgrades and I don't know what to tell him.
I've thought about doing 190/30 and KC stage 2 and Charlie said I would be able to do full weight if I was able to pull the fuel back from it. Also seems anything over a 30 and towing seems to get hot. But hopefully you'll get some real world answers here. :thumb:
I just got back from two camping trips towing 7500-8k trailer. I have the KC 1.5 and I do not think I would go any bigger unless you are comfortable driving constently at 2500 rpms while towing to keep the egts down. At 65 on flat if it goes into over drive I stay at 1000 egt, the rpms being around 1600. When I am not in OD it is around 850-950 cruising 60-65 at 2000-2100. I ran gearhead 8k tow tune on the most recent trip which has a higher OD shift point than php 40hp tow tune that I used on the last trip. I need to have OD just removed from tow/haul mode in my tune but have not had them revised yet.
Charlie would have more information on towing and turbo size but for me and where I live I think this size turbo makes the most since we tow a lot. Also I have stock injectors so the need for more air isn't really there but if I had bigger injectors then I might have a different take.
I have been wanting to add a ported intake and BD headers too just to see if that would aid in keeping temps lower when towing. But I always keep my egts at 1200 and below. I never see anything to crazy except when I blew a turbo boot off and then it shot up to 1600 really quick.
Yes, the motor is closer to its peak torque band at 2000 rpm, it's not having to work as hard to maintain speed on reasonably flat ground. I run around 800-950 at that speed on reasonably flat ground. Once you hit some major hills, nothing but slowing down or gearing down is going to help. Gearing down only helps so much, at some point you'll either see the EGT go way up or you'll show down.
I'll have to pay closer attention next time I tow and see if I see a drop at 70. I think I have been seeing egts go up when overdrive gets in and I tend to slow down.
Yeah it's sort of funny, because you are thinking egts are up so I need to slow down, but then you can fall out of power range and they still go up.
I know my trucks runs its best at 65 plus, but around here the speed limit is 55 until I can get to the interstate, so when going 55-60 the egts rise lugging along( off course I can come out of OD), and I think that is probably where a stage2 would probably lag even more.
This is probably where a 430 geared truck would be better.
Thanks, good to know.I am putting and 05 rear in my truck and have been thinking about putting 430s in it.Looks like about 100-150 rpm difference.Nice truck would love to have the tow boss.
