If you really want to save money, just pick up an old beater for cash and carry liability only. When diesel was $4.80 a gallon, I picked up a 96 Honda Civic 5 speed for less than 3 grand that was in excellent shape. I put a little money in it to make it reliable, and I drive it all the time. It gets 30 MPG in town and 40 on the highway. Insurance is about 60 bucks a month for full coverage, and even with gas at $1.50 a gallon and diesel at $2.50, it still saves me hundreds of dollars a month since I drive a few hundred miles a week. I'm also not loading the miles on my truck like I was. Maintenance is super cheap too. I can do an oil change for 9 bucks.
