North Pole, Alaska = $4.54 per gal. Most homes heat using fuel oil. Price to heat our homes range from $4,000-over $6,000 per year. Most of our electricity is created from diesel powered power plants. That gives us a cost of over 20¢ per KWH. Our electric bill ranges from $130-230 per month depending on how often we have to plug our cars in during the cold months. We have no other source of energy in this area other than wood. A few businesses in Fairbanks have access to NG but not the rest of us. The AK pipeline runs right through my town and yet we pay West Coast delivery prices. I heard we surpassed CA as the area where the cost of energy is the most expensive. I haven't seen fuel under $3 per gal for years now. |

Hey Santa_AK, Hows the roads up there this year? Heading up in July with some people on our bikes and we have heard a lot of different info about roads. Mainly going to Fairbanks, over by Denali to Anchorage. Is the Alaska Stewart Cassiar hwy 37 a good route? Want to go through Oregon on the way back down. Thanks David |

Hey David,
I'm not too sure about the Cassiar HWY. I know they were doing work on it several summers ago. It seems the farther north you go, the worse the roads get, but that doesn't stop the bicyclists. The only thing about the Parks HWY to Anchorage is that it really has no emergency lane. It's just a 2-lane HWY. So, just be cautious. Lots of people bike it throughout the summer. Overall, it is a good road. It is paved all the way to Anchorage and beyond. We drove it 4 times this winter for my son's hockey games in Anchorage. I know there are several project going on in North Pole and in Fairbanks, but nothing that will slow you down much. The Richardson HWY coming in from Delta Junction is usually in good shape and is also paved. The weather lately has been great. It's getting up in the 60's during the day, but still frosting at night. Should be great by the time you arrive. Hope your trip is safe and enjoyable. Looks like you will save a bundle on gas. |
