Overdrive button kills all gauges

My sister's boyfriend is about to purchase a Ford F250 with the 5.4L V8 to haul around his lawncare trailer. He was driving the truck yesterday and hit the overdrive button on the shifter and lost all of his instrument cluster. They were still lit, but everything went to it's minimum value.

Anyone have any idea what might have caused this? Thanks

Yep, what dave said. Take the covers off the steering column, and there will be a couple wires running through the shifter, tape them up and put it back together.
