Question A Friend Needs Help

I have a friend with a 04 Ex 5.4 gasser and adjustable peddles. He is having problems with his brake lights in that they do not work. I'm no mechanic, but didn't there use to be a switch attached to the brake peddle that when the pedal was pushed it made the brake lights come on? Kinda like a gravity switch I guess. If anyone can shed any light on this and/or give me a fix I and he would be greatful. My friend is trying to avoid a trip the ford dealership. He is also kinda interested in a approx. amount for the repair.
Thanks for any help in advance.
