96 Explorer tranny problem

96 Exloder XLT 4x4 - Tranny problem, delayed shifting for all gears up and down, kinda felt like a vacuum problem. Dropped the pan yesterday, needed a filter, but found these in the pan. Need some help with an exploded diagram of these parts and placement. Also, it appears that I've got something jammed in the "rooster comb" (pic 2). Just wanted some advice on whether this might be tackled by a DIY'er like myself.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news....that's a broken band. Looks like it's time for a rebuild. Hopefully the case isn't messed up. Good luck man. You could look into a used one to save some cash....but you may have a hard time finding a low mileage good unit.

Thanks, Joe. I was commenting to my wife that I thought that was part of the band jammed into the rooster comb. I'm going to look for a rebuilt unit and maybe swap it out.

Hey there. Daughter's tranny went south on the '96 Explorer 4x4 and I'm considering having it rebuilt. It's got about 125k miles on it, so it was getting close anyway. I've also considered buying a donor truck and getting a tranny that way because she also needs the passenger side front and rear doors due to an accident. It's a good truck, but it's not worth a whole lot. I'm curious what you guys have to say.

1) rebuilt by a tranny shop (AAMCO or similar)
2) donor truck
3) sell it for parts and buy something different

PS. Daughter's two hours away in Flagstaff at Northern Arizona University, so she doesn't have ANY money, so this will be on my dime...

How much is a rebuild?? By the time you buy the donor truck, spend time swapping parts, and get rid of the donor, you would be money ahead in having yours rebuilt. Besides, who knows what kind of shape the used one is in. If you wann keep the veh for awhile, get yours rebuilt. I you wanna fix it and sell it, put he used in it. I deal with this all the time with my customers. It is hard for me to give a an honest opinion without seeing the rest of the truck, but I assume it's in decent shape. Hope this helps Shawn.
