78 transmission problem

I have a 78 F 150 that I use on my farm to haul firewood and trash with. Three days ago I tried to put it into gear and all it would go into was park and reverse. The linkange would not go any lower than reverse. Any ideas?

Auto?

I am far from a mechanic but my 79 did something like this, I had P,R,N and D, no 2 or 1. I pulled the trans pan off and (don't know the proper names) but a "lever" that I was told drops it down a gear when you step on it and pushes a plunger in, broke off. It landed on the linkage and stopped/blocked the tranny from being able to shift in a lower gear.

Hope you can understand what I am talking about .

Make sure that the linkage isn't binding. Worn out engine mounts can cause the exhaust to "bang" up on the linkage. (unsure of your engine...) All kinds of stuff happens on old work trucks. You could also disconnect the linkage at the tranny to see if it's the linkage itself or the trans. If the linkage is fine, see post above.
Good luck.
