5.4 vs 5.8 gas mileage and performance?

i got a buddy whos lookin at a 5.4 and a 5.8, the 5.8 has 138k and the 5.4 has 170k with a rebuilt tranny at 150k. there both 4x4 both extra cab, the 5.8 is long bed the 5.4 is short bed. what one gets better mileage and is better power wise. i know the 5.8 is a little simpler because its OHV, but which is better and more reliable?

First Id like to state that you posted this on one of my friends birthday. Lol On a serious note I have a 5.4 and the engine is really reliable. I have it an a E250. I get around 15mpg and around 10 towing 4000lbs. The engine has a lot of balls. Not a PSD obviously. The only flaw I have with it is those pesky spark plugs. I had to replace mine and didnt want to risk it. No mechanic would do it. I had to suck it up and send it to Ford. If you get one, just check the plugs. If they need to be done, do them. If they sit and go past there recommended time, youll have issues.
