Exclamation trucks Dead!! calling all ranger guys

well hey guys. i usually dont hang around the Gasser section but i got a problem. well my buddy does anyway

so today he was driving to school.i was there waiting for him. anyway i got a phone call from him, he said the ranger just died! i guess he was driving and it just shut off. he pulled over and tried restarting it and nothing. when i turn the key on you get some dash lights. no fuel pump sound, nothing. turn the key to start it and nothing, does nothing. so i went and got the trailer and took it to his house. we put it in the shop. we started with the battery. put a charger on it. pulled every fuse and checked them. everything is good. we jumped the starter solenoid it turns over. the only thing left is the computer. so i got my tuner out of my truck. plugged it in, it turned on went to check for DTC'S and it couldn't communicate with the computer. so sounds like me the computer is fried??

-oh and on a side note for the past few weeks hes been blowing random fuses. again i think its computer related

any thoughts? im trying to narrow it down for him before he buys a $540 computer from ford.

i know in the strokers what the fried computer symptoms are thats where i got that info.

sorry for all of the writing im at a loss

What year? It sounds to me like he's got a power or ground issue to the pcm. Or a bad ignition switch.

duh sorry, its a 2001 4.0 v6 SOHC 4x4.

so if the ignition switch is bad, how would that effect the pcm i guess if my tuner turned on when i plugged it in the pcm at least had power? but what do i know

The datalink has constant power. The pcm will not react to the scanner if it's not powered up or if the key is off.

I attached the page from the wiring diagram that has the pcm connector. I would start by load testing all the powers and grounds with a headlamp or fog lamp bulb.

Sorry for all of the questions. That makes sense. so is there a ignition wire that powers the PCM?
All of the accessories work. But I know my 98 explorer had like 3 or 4 accessory wires. I wouldn't think the PCM would be on a accessory wire?

The pcm is controlled by a relay that is controlled by the ignition switch. If you look at the diagram you will notice that some wires say voltage at all times and some say voltage supplied in run or start.

i take that back. there is more then one wire. so i should probably start by testing the power wires with the key on? so if i find one that doest work then what? are they fused somewhere
