5 speed stick with ATF?

Do the 5 speeds from around the 1988 era really take ATF? The chilton book says to put ATF in but I'm not to sure if that is right. The truck is an 88' F250 with a 460 and 5 speed. I don't want it to break because it had a $5K repair bill a few months ago and I've been the only one driving it. It caused some family business problems.

Thanks. I'm just trying to get this truck going again. I just got done fixing the radiator mounts and changing the oil. I need to go to Ford tomorrow and get some powersteering fluid because the thing has a leak now and I'll ask them what they think I should put in the tranny.
