4.0 Ranger

My buddy's 96 Ranger with 4.0 v6 with 160k does strange things when he starts it up. He'll start it and it used to rev up a little bit until it was warmed up then slow back down. Now he'll start it and it will try to die then he'll give it lil gas and then it will straighten up and run just fine. Any ideas?

I found an write up on an explorer forum about how to clean the IAC. Could we get by with this?

You can try it but in my experience that never worked. It was always the motor that was bad. You can pull it off and start the truck or just turn the key on and off and if it doesn't move in and out very quickly it's not working and cleaning most likely won't help.

Check the IAC; if it's good, replace the MAF sensor.

That's good to know. We're gonna work on it after he gets out of class here pretty soon.
