Need a locals opinion, anyone in saint pete/tba?
I just recently got my truck and have a pretty weird drivetrain issue that I can't seem to figure out, was hoping a local with more experience could check the truck out in person and maybe see what it is.
The truck sometimes has a grinding type sound, I at first assumed it was a stuck pad/piston somewhere, the brakes were squeeling pretty good and needed to be changed. Went ahead and changed out all four rotors and pads last weekend and the rear differential fluid(it was low from a leaky rtv seal) with a new gasket and 85w140. Problem is still there, more evident at high speeds, but its an on off type of grinding noise ONLY under throttle, i haven't heard it while completely or mostly off throttle. It needs an alignment because i can hear the drivers side tire rubbing under full turn(hitting frame 37x14.5). Its getting a full alignment tomorrow to knock that out of the equation. Any local who I can meet up with for a few minutes to check it out? I'll throw in some cash for fuel(diesel/beer :p) if so. I can drive to you if your in the area as well if it makes it easier. The noise is starting to worry me as it established on the way over here from when i bought it(seem to be getting louder). Thanks for the help. |

can you post up a vid? tc maybe? How loud is it?

I was just about to send you a PM lol. It's not very loud but definitely audible but doubt i could capture it with a camera. I thought of TC as well but wouldn't it be doing the noise at all times not just under throttle, as in while the car is in gear and engine is turning the tc regardless of speed? It definitely goes away when i let off the throttle at slow speeds, at highway speeds its pretty loud and does the same thing(on/off throttle).
Any chance of you meeting up this weekend? I can drive to you. |

I might be able to meet up with you on sunday.
This is gonna sound really stupid, but when I first up on my exhaust one of my clamps was close to touching the heat shield next to the trans, whenever I was on the throttle it would rattle like crazy, took me forever to realize what it was. I kept thinking tc.. Just something else to cross off the list. How do you even hear it over those 37s hummin? |

I'll look under to check the exhaust out. Its pretty audible at slow speeds <15 mph but its random at those speeds, doesn't do it all the time. On the highway i can hear the tires but there's definitely a different sound when i give it some throttle

so no sound coasting only when on the throttle... and its a grinding noise not a rattle?

Correct, only when under throttle. Definitely a grinding noise like a really worn out brake pad on rotor. It's driving me nuts lol
It almost sounds the same as the rubbing noise form the tire(nice shiny spot on the frame) but I tried turning back and forth in a parking lot but its still there.

Went to get it aligned today and the alignment itself was pretty good, the trackbar had a loose bolt and that was the play in the steering

so any change to the noise now that its aligned?

Nope, same issue with the same behavior
