Since the "Crab Rationalation Plan" went into effect a few years ago, the Crab fleet is 1/3 the size it used to be. So there is alot less jobs avaible now, and alot of crab deckhands that had to find other work. But, with the quota system you kinda know what your going to make, the veriable is how long it takes to catch'em and market value. generally the jobs are better. Crab fishing is really tough. Its glorified a bit on TV. 35-45 hr sessions on deck with your head still working not everybody can do, you need alot of heart and passion for it. Everybody that goes crab fishing doesn't make money. It is fun when your on Crab or fish, but slow fishing,( and it happenes the the best) can be a real mind game. I don't know any crab fisherman personally. Guys used to fly to 'Dutch and keep going around all the boats and ask the crew if somebody hasn't showen up for gear work and if someone is absent just start working. |

coming from the flying side of things, the bush pilot jobs up there are in the same category. by that i mean, you have better luck showing up on their doorstep ready to work. im sure you can imagine how many yahoos send em emails and such wanting to know if they can have a job...but never show. ill bet this has become 10fold since the like of deadliest catch

I don't think its a question of sending in a resume or anything like that...It's a matter of getting inline at a processing plant up there at Dutch Harbor so you can be around the boats and meet the captains. Sending in an application/resume won't do you any good, you physically have to be in Alaska. There is a long waiting list to get on one of those boats and its rare for a position to open up simply due to the money they make, the thrill of the catch, the short season(s), and being familiar and relying the people around you. I wish you good luck, but not to be Debby Downer, you need to be in Alaska or Washington to have a decent shot. |

Hmm..if your looking for danger, if your looking for adventure, if your looking to improve your character or reallly find our what your made of young man why don't you sign up for the Marines, Army, Navy or any branch of your armed forces? Even the venerable US Coast Guard? You will be serving your country, getting paid, learning trades/skills etc.

The coast guard is the only branch of military I'd join, and they are hard to get into, very hard, I've tried. |

Sorry to hear about your family loss in the military, we all have been touched in that regard. How are your swimming, diving, R&S skills? Those would go along way to short listing you for anything "water" oriented..is there a Coast Guard auxillary you could join..I know there is a plethora of outstanding programs/courses that you might find very beneficial. I always like to encourage anyone wanting to improve themselves, their neighborhood or their country.
