Which trolling motor?

Since the boat forums keep leaving me "high and dry" (no pun intended), I figured I would ask here. I have a 17' aluminum bass boat and I am looking to upgrade my trolling motor. Currently it is a foot operated bow mount motorguide that has 28 lbs of thrust. It works for fishing in low wind/waves in a lake, but I know there is NO WAY that this will work for me in the rivers (where I really want to fish) My question is, will a 50-55 lb thrust trolling motor pull this boat upstream in a medium current? I don't really have room with the other batteries to make a 24 volt setup, although if I have to I guess I could move the trolling batteries to the front somehow. The highest 12 volt motors I could find are 50lbs or just over. Anyone have an opinion or experience?
