I've never caught a Gar what else do you have in your streams. Any Trout? I love fishing rivers and streams it beats the crap out of lake fishing for me. I like floating or walking the bank. If there are trout I usually through a trusty Panther Martin or Rooster tail. Mepps works pretty good too. I am an active fisherman and I don't like just sitting there drowning a worm (although I still do it, usually while I am cooking the fish I caught casting) My favorite brown lure is a #9 floating Rapala. They are expensive when your learning to fish with them though, at $7 a pop, loose a few of those and your out $20 quick.
I also like to roll flies in the rivers if I am feeling confident but I don't do it enough to give up my lures all together. Next time I go I am going to try tossing a few wooly buggers that will get down deep in the holes.

Now I can't tell you that but I'll tell you it was up in the mountains. No (native) trout that size will be haning around down here when it's 110+ outside.
