my new found love, fishing in Minnesota

last year i started fishing walleyes on the St Louis River near duluth. talking with other fisherman, i was informed by more than 1, "obviously a fisherman has to set his own 'trophy' goal, but i would say a 28" fish is a wall hanger".

so i set my goal. not much of a summer fisherman, i much more enjoyed winter fishing through the ice. i fished hard every weekend of May. I caught many walleyes, but none close to my goal. finally on the last day i had to fish the river, i hooked, what i thought was a sturgeon or catfish. to my surprise i pulled out a 27 7/8" walleye. close but no cigar.

that following winter i pulled a 28 1/16" walleye, through the ice, fishing for crappies. crappie rod & 4lb test.

i was quite surprised by the walleye, it was the first walleye i caught all winter. i was so used to catching crappies

btw, that is a 14" crappie..

i do have the spot on my GPS for this next ice fishing season. can't wait to try out my new fishhouse.

in the first pic, i wasn't drunk. it was 1:30 a.m. on a work night.

nice looking fish. If that walleye was much bigger, he probably wouldn't have fit through the hole. haha

We enjoyed going up there. We went about 5 years in a row renting the big houseboats and pulling the fishing boats behind. We now go to Canada fishing every spring instead. We have some guys who are AARP members, so the trip to Rainy Lake was getting tough on them. We talk about going again, but nothing but talk right now
