thinking of getting a .50 BMG ORRR SVD Dragunov
i have been trying to decide this for awhile... trying to decide if i want a russian made svd dragunov or a barrett .50 cal. i love both guns, one is alot bigger and packs alot more punch, the other is a all round great rifle that is a little more on the practical side... anybody have either of these rifles and wanna help me decide?
Dragunov ![]() Barrett

Personally, even if I was given the BMG, I couldn't justify buying enough ammo to be worth its purchase. Your mileage may vary.

My vote is for the .50!

its tough, they are both pretty expensive. i looked into ammo cost for the .50, haha its not very nice. soviet 7.62 is like 80 bucks for 300 rounds and the svd is a brutally accurate rifle................................but the BMG can split an engine block...
ahhhh decisions decisions... |

The M82/M107 a 2MOA rifle at best, but its a blast to shoot. If you want accuracy in the 50, look for an Armalite, or even the Barrett bolt action 50s.

+1 on the bolt action. I have shot both and the bolt action was insane. I loved it. Semi is nice, but you will feel too guilty about the ammo cost to enjoy it. I didn't have to pay for ammo and I still prefered the bolt.
You can pick up the bolt action barrett's at a pretty reasonable price. If you have a place to do some real long shooting 500M +, you would be really happy you got the bolt action. Lighter too! |

well using the >50 in iraq i found it to be a great weapon to say remove a vehicle from operation...and at 7.00usd for a snigle round on good ammo its pricy. Also not a lot of people think of the follow through shot (after the target impact) there is alot of liability with 3600 feet per second and a possable rear travel of 3.8 miles thats a hole lot of responsibility for a person to assume.to remember its a WEAPON... now the drag is an awesom rifel it has target impact of 1900 feet per second at 1000 meters thats smoking and a fall rate (depending on weather and humdty) 1/ft per 1000m so its nice...most have a 1:12 or 1:14 twist some are diffrent if you find a 1:8 twist get it. 7.62 is plentifull, you can find match grade and som of then are hollow point FMJ so for me and my eperence i'd go with the drag....al so lookinto local law some places wont let you fire .50 centerfire becase of range..also theres nthing you cant do with the .50 that 7.62 cant, just plenty of range time and learn triger squeez and breathing cotroll..
hell even im certified for 8 rounds in a 4.5" circle at 1000m GOOD luck |

I got an Armalite AR-50 not too long ago. Its a very accurate rifle and can be had for a little less than the Barrett. Any of the 50 BMG rifles will be a solid investment as they will hold their value for years to come.

If you're going to spend that much money, I'd consider the .338 Lapua. It's more accurate at 1000m than the .50 but doesn't have the ballistics. It holds the world record for the longest kill shot. Over 3000 yds on a prarie dog. Barrett has the M98 that looks like one sweet rifle. Plus they weigh a lot less, less recoil, & less muzzle report. If I had the cash, I'd get the M98.
