Guide me to which gun?

I wanna buy a gun. Originally wanted a pistol and CHL but maybe not right now. Thinking either rifle or shotgun. But don't know enough to make a good decision.
I want something that I can, of course, defend us/house with. Not so worried about modding it.
Want to use it more for fun or hogs or anything else bad. Not necessarily coons, deer, etc. I don't feel a need to kill them.
And price, duh. Don't want to spend over $500, and for sure not $1000. I'd like to stay under $350, if possible.

Like mojo said. 870's are cheap and very reliable. And ammo is cheap and plentiful.

870 is nice, but u can pick up a mossberg 500 for little over 300 and they have a kit out that will come with 2 barrels....u will get a 26 inch I believe which can be use for ur out door stuff, and it will come with either a 18 or 20 inch barrel that u can use for home defense...



Or u could get a judge, that would shoot 45 and 410, kinda the best of both worlds.....and u can get the cheaper judge for a little over 400 I think

And I warned, I don't know hardly anything. I've shot a 12ga 3-4 rounds. That's it. I understand it all, just haven't done enough of it or been around it enough.

With the Remington, there's tons of them.
I know the diff. between a slug and buckshot, but would I care about using either/or?
What about vented rib barrels?
12ga or 20ga?

Basically the same with the Mossberg.

And then what's the diff. in .45 and .410? Caliber? If so, why is one only two decimal places, and the other three?

Mossberg 5oo is a 12g....as far as the shot goes, u will use different ones for different things...so it would depend on wat ur doin....and the judge shoots a 45lc...which is close to a rifle shell and the 410 is a shotgun shell....u can shot the 45lc up to about a 100 yards...and a 410 is gonna shoot 40-50 yards....
