Getting my first gun

So i think im going to be getting my first rifle in a few weeks. Im wanting to have a suitable gun to do some elk/deer hunting, and other game of the like.

I cant really decide between a 308, 30-06, a 7mm mag, or a 300 win mag.

I was leaning towards a win mag, but i heard the kick is huge on them. but then again that was my roommate saying that; he's a little smaller than i am. im 6' 250lb hes like 5'5" 200.

I was thinking of going to Cabelas in Sidney NE, and looking at their consignment guns.

Anyone have any input on hunting rifles? any things to look for?

Nothing wrong with any of these calibers, but I would lean towards an '06 or 7mag. The '06 will handle just about anything you can throw at it in North America. Ammo is available anywhere. The 7 mag will be a great long distance shooter. It will also handle just about anything except maybe the large Brown bears. Ammo will be available most places. Recoil on either will be about the same. Save your brass. Learn to reload. Much better performance with any caliber you choose.

All of the above are great calibers.

I personally went 30-06 and love it, plus it's easy to find.

7mm mag would probably be the hardest to find.

I ended up getting a Savage 110 7mm mag

Picked her up at a pawn shop case and all for $275... not bad imo.

Shoots pretty good groups. this was at about 40yds. dont mind the stragglers, those weren't my shots
