Arrow Which Handgun

I am new to handguns and am looking for suggestions on what to buy. I plan to do a little target shooting for fun and keep it for personal protection within my home. It will not be carried as I live in a stupid state that doesn't allow such. I'm not looking to spend much, maybe $500-$700. I'll get something better later. I'm leaning toward a semi-auto over a revolver, I like the feel better, but I have no idea what the best caliber would be. I'm trying to learn a little before I go into the gun shops and look like a complete fool! Any suggestions would be welcome, I know this is a little vague.

I would look into a SiG or a Glock if want a semi-auto probably in 9mm. It's not the best caliber for personal protection but it is cheap to shoot. If you want something bigger get a 40 S&W, it's better for protection and only costs a little more than the 9mm's. If I were going to buy a gun for what your going to use it for, I would get a SiG 226. It's a full size gun, has a pretty high capacity magazine, and you should be able to find a used one pretty cheap.

I forgot about the xd's they're good guns that are fairly inexpensive too. If you do look at a Glock see if it's comfortable in your hand, there's very few people that they actually fit and I also don't think they're very comfortable.

Springfield XD or XDM are probably one of the most user friendly gun and come with alot of options for a new handgun owner. They are very reliable and not too expensive. Awesome guns. Good luck!

Glock 20 is the way to go and get one at a gun show if you can.
