10/22 hands down. I have never had trouble with my factory mags, however the Hot Mags (I think), which is usually the banana clips they sell at Academy, Cabela's, Bass Pro, etc SUCK! They have a Hot Lips version, which has steel feed lips that is more expensive but well worth it, and if you get really dedicated then look into the Tactical Innovations mags at TI25 Mags - Tactical Innovations Inc. I have 2 so far and they are fully adjustable to fit every different receiver perfect and once you get them dialed in they are awesome, and reliable.

10-22, Magnum research graphite tension barrel, Volquartsen trigger group, Fajen laminate stock, Simmons red dot scope. I use stock mags with very little problems. I also take them apart and lube them with snake oil.

Gotta marlin but not a papoose. Nice little gun. I actually love my little cheap Henry Lever Action .22. Lot cheaper than shootin the .44 and 30-30, and make me feel like a cowboy.

10-22 is my choice, I have friends with fewer rounds through their lever actions that jam alot more often. I love the fact that the aftermarket backs the 10-22 so much, however I haven't modded it yet. They can be had for about 250 new, used probably less.

How much you want to spend?

The sweetest shooting .22 I've owned (and I have quite a few) is a Winchester 52D. This one is civilian production, not a CMP beater. Beautifully balanced, two stage Crowley trigger group, wicked accurate. Kinda expensive these days, collectors drove the price way up, but they'll bury me with that rifle, it's just too sweet to let go of. Browning made a repro of the 52B a few years back, last time I looked they were selling in the $500-600 range. Worth the price.

A dandy that's real accurate for its heavy barrel is the Springfield M1922, sometimes also called the M2. Training rifle, built to simulate the weight and feel of a .30-06 bolt action. Also rather expensive.

I've had a Marlin 39TDS for a long time. Cutdown version of their lever action. Very well built. Also have a Winchester 9422M Golden Boy in 22WMR, that I bought right before Winchester shut down production. Sweet, but the ammo is a bit expensive.

Have two 10/22's, hard to go wrong with them. Reliable, bags of upgrades.

I'm getting ready to buy one more - a British SMLE trainer, rebarreled for .22LR. Their classic bolt action rifle they used through two major wars, very smooth action. They're also kinda expensive, in the $700-800 range.

Speaking of CMP - you should look into joining that. Every so often, they'll sell off some ROTC bolt action 22's. The Win 52's are just about gone, but they have some very good bolt actions from other makers. They're also selling off some Springfield 03's, now that's a beautifully made rifle in 30-06.

I think I could close my eyes, the bullets just go to the right place.
my father bought me my 66 as my first gun and i love it. great little gun right there.

If you want a super accurate rifle I would go with the CZ 452. For the price it cannot be beat. I own one in .17 HMR and cannot believe how accurate it is.

i bought a used pump made in the 30-40's. a Remington.Love it! it has a cool factor unbeat just because of the well loved look.Sometimes it jambs, but mostly I think its my fault. No where near as accurate as the Marlin Squirrel gun i got, but loads more fun! If you think you want a semi auto, Ruger 10/22 only way to go. But if you trying for fun and teaching or learning shot placement i would go with a bolt action or single shot. Go name brand.Tuff to teach a kid to take his time and make one shot kills when you can point and empty a 50 round clip in 15 seconds.Best bet would be to buy several guns.A single shot bolt action , an antique pump, a lever, a full custom Ruger, ohh, maybe a Kimber bolt action with a 24 power scope.Might want a couple 22 mags thrown in there too. Dont be afraid to buy one of each! The 22 is so much fun to shoot in any format! Hell we havnt even touched on the pistols or the pro target guns, dammit now I got to go buy another 22!

Can't go wrong with the 10/22. I bought mine in 2000 and did a complete rebuild in 06. My dad's Apache Black Nylon 66 is still my favorite 22 to shoot though.
