winch on bed rails

has anyone thought about mounting a winch in the bed with the hitch rails.
5th wheel hitches are good for 15-20 klbs. id be using a winch around 12-15.
i can only assume that it would put similar stresses on the rails that a hitch would because the winch would put a slow steady load on the rails similar to towing heavy.

think its worth wild for me to try it out

THat's how we winch our elk out here, we took an old 5th wheel hitch and mounted an old receiver hitch on it so we can get the elk right into the back of the truck. Granted its not 12k but works great. We have winched trucks out with it before too.

any pics of what you have..im thinking about making the hole mount. im trying to keep the winch as low to the bed floor as i can.

Keep in mind that rolling friction and sliding friction are two different animals. A psd can tow 15k, but that load is on wheels. If you plan on pulling on something that weighs 15k sitting on the ground things might get ugly.

Also, be careful with the angle of the winch cable running over your tailgate or the end of you bed.

Mounting a winch to the fifth wheel rails would be a slick idea for sure. I could easily find some use for one.

My main reason for wanting to do this is for beach recovery. I know 15k in a lot of dead weight I was only using that number as an example. I have a industrial worm drive reamsy I will be using. And I plain

I picked up a worm drive ramsay industrel winch for next to nothing. I just got the motor back from rebuild yesterday. I'll be getting my rails at the end of this job, then all illhave to skis fab up a mount and I'll be good to go. Im even going to build a set of spades for the reese hitch so I'll have a good anchor in the sand.

Im also working on a 5wheel dump trailer. My plain is to have a set of rails mount on the frame of the trailer so I can winch 10' long longs into the dump box
