WTB On Board Air System
I'm shopping around to buy an on board air system for my train horns (Nathan K5LA's). It needs to be able to put out 150psi and also come with or have provisions for attachments for running air tools. It would be nice to change a flat with an impact wrench either on the truck or the boat trailer.
I'd like an air tank/compressor that will fit in the toolbox of my truck to keep it conceiled. It can't fill up the entire truck box because I use at least 1/3rd for emergency tools/oil/ect... Looking to spend no more than $300-350 Let me know what yall got! Also, is there any other companies that make a decent 12V compressor besides ViAir? |

I've been considering doing OBA myself but not for train horns and I am looking at a DIY system. I can get a big truck air compressor and was thinking of driving it with a pto from my tranny but there is a weight issue. There is another option using an old ac compressor if your interested, I haven't looked at it too much yet but I plan to when I get closer to doing this. Here's ya a link for a diy Jeep setup. I have seen some folks mount them to the exterior side of the frame rail with great results. You might consider that. Oh and I recall someone wanting to mount an old AC compressor to drive their train horns. I'll see if I can dig up that thread. Having said that Raul sells the Viair compressors on his website and they are top of the line. I'm not sure about the other ORG vendors...

If you up'd your price range a little i think my set-up would be perfect for you. I don't like the 12volt systems....to me,.. they aren't enough. I run a 5000 watt inverter, which powers a 115volt, 2.5 Horsepower, Porter Cable "pancake" air compressor...it also feeds into a 9 gallon air tank(but you won't need it) Because I have a high powered inverter, I can now run major electric power tools right out of my truck....I checked it one time,....I can run a 15amp Dewalt circ saw, a 1/2" drill, and 2 flood lights ,...all at the same time. As for the air side....I can run my air tools easily. |

I doubt you'll be able to fit that K5 without taking down the tire. Unless you want to separate the bells. I've seen it done but it looks like a pain by any means. Have you considered some smaller alternatives?
