Waste gate issue?
I have a 03 diesel Ford excursion. It has 77,000 and a dp tuner chip. The turbo is not stock (was told it was a banks big head but dont believe it is). Heres the problem... in the past on occasion when I would start it in the mornings (when it was cold) the turbo would make a high pitched spooling sound. I would pull out and start to climb the hill to work and I had NO power and it was blowing clouds or black smoke (raw fuel). My boost gauge also showed 0. My egt temps would go through the roof (not completely sure if that gauge is accurate). Once it would warm up it would start working properly again.
About a week ago it just stuck that way. No matter how warm it gets or how long I run it, it stays that way. I need it to drive long distances because I am going back to work soon. I dont know much about these turbos but it sounds like the waste gate is stuck wide open or something. Does anyone have any other opinions. How can it be fixed? Is it something I can do myself with a mechanic buddy of mine? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. |

First off what motor is it? 7.3 or a 6.0?

7.3
Sorry I didnt include that earlier, I just was under the impression that is the only size they made in 03. But it is the 7.3

Check your IC boots first. Sounds like one popped off and you arent getting any boost.

Sounds like the EBPV is sticking shut. Check that first and let us know what you find.
