7.3 fuel problem

Ok here is what I know. I am driving home from work turn to go up my street and my trucks puffs and chugs and dies. I roll down the hill in reverse and start it back up like 3 times make it home. My roomate get home I take his truck drop some 911 in and she runs fine for about 500 miles. Then I am out of town and the same thing happens. takes a bit more to get her going but she runs. i originally thought I was gelling but last time was too warm so i was thinking bad fuel. Now the fuel seems fine but she will run for about 20 minutes and die. Then if I wait a few hours I can go out start it up and go again. when I will no start it will run off wd-40 but I know it is not getting fuel. I see no check engine light come on. I am confused. when I turn the key over to cycle the glow plugs the check engine light comes on and then go off like normal. I am not sure where to start. Also smokes a little white when I turn it over. There is fuel in the bowl and I have change three fuel filters. Thanks for the help also sometimes my tach is not bouncing when I turn it over.

Mine ran bad right before it went out so yes, I guess it could run and then quit.
