Turbo Bad?

I was told my turbo likely needed to be cleaned, was blowing more black smoke than usual when i footed it. I started to pull it apart this morning and this is what I found. Note the chip in the blade! Also, how much shaft play should there be, I can move the shaft around quite a bit...probably 1/16" total play (1/32" up and down).

Do I even bother cleaning it? Can I just get a new wheel? rebuild it? replace the whole turbo (208K miles)?

To my knowledge you should have no shaft play ( saying this because I've installed three new turbo's this past week and none had any shaft play i could detect while pre oiling them).

I had my turbo (6.0L - Garret) apart two weekends ago and there was no noticeable shaft play. I've seen replacement parts online but if yours already has 208K miles, I would spent the 1K and get a new one or maybe an upgraded one.

You could always run it a bit longer until it really is noticeable boost wise. It depends on how much you enjoy taking the turbo in and out of the truck.

Slight lateral play is ok but zero axel play. I would tear it apart could be just a compressor wheel. What kind of cold air intake do you have, something must have gotten sucked in. Might want to invest in a better filter. There is an awesome sticky on how to rebuild the turbo.

You know since you got it all apart if you wanted to upgrade you can contact WPE for a 1.5 kit. This would be a nice upgrade and priced reasonable.
