charging problems

I'm getting ready to pull my hair out. Batteries went south last fall. I didn't have time to replace them so it sat for the winter. 3 weeks ago I put brand new yellow top optimas in it. Had a hard time starting it, i guess my block heater or cable is bad too. After trying about 10 times, letting the starter cool inbetween tries, it finally started. After a few minutes of running the alternator pegged 18. I don't know how long it was there but no more than 2 or 3 minutes. Then it wasn't charging at all. I took the alternator off last week and took it to a rebuild shop and it tested fine on the bench so the guy tells me there was a lot of problems with the stator shorting out intermittently so I had him go through it. Picked it up yesterday and put it on. It still isn't charging. New batteries, should be good alternator, all connections are clean and I checked voltage at field wires 12v on 1 1.5 on the other. Anybody got any ideas.
Thanks

What do you have at the batteries when it's running? If you have 12 V when it's running it's not charging. Should be around 13-14v. Is the ground cable tight? and connected. Possible broken wire. Electrical problems sucks period.

If battery cables are good, and lead from alternator is good, then the
problem is still in the alternator.

Only 1 alternator. All fuses are good. I am going to pull it off and take it back for a bench test.

Also check your wiring if the alt checks good on the bench again. I believe you have the batt wire and then an ignition wire also that needs to provide voltage when you cycle the key for the alternator to excite the field so it will work.
