1996 battery light on

Well today i drove the truck about 10-15 min hasnt been ran since last week sometime but my batter light started flickering and came on solid shortly after. i the gauge is reading just on the "N" part on normal for battery. i popped the hood and something smelt hot, not sure what it was but alternator was to hot to touch, batters are 2 years old. i need the truck to go hunting today, so help would be appreciated. thanks

Low batterys will make alternator hot my 94 the light goes on and off all the timeL
