calling all techs

A buddy of mine decided to replace his rear main seal while he had his tranny out for a clutch replacement. It is part number 40436 from Napa.
The problem is that it came with the seal and also a Main Bearing Plate.
It looks different from the OE seal.

Is there a tool that you have to use to install the new seal?

There is a special tool used to remove the old seal journal, and one to replace it. It is possible to do it without the tools though.

he claims there is no seal journal on there now.

was there an update to the rear main seal since the early 99's?

he claims that the inside diameter of the original seal is much smaller than the new seal both without the journal.

u are looking at what they call a wear sleeve....u need to use red locktite to seal it to the crank. The motors were not produced with them, but all replacements have it....
