truck died

i have a 01 7.3 f350 was droping off a rid on mower to a freind on a little 5*8 trailer. was about an hour drive a couple hills nothing to bad got there fine on the way back now with just the trailer almost back and the truck just dies. the engen temp was norm had fuel and the battery was fine.the only thing that was high was the oil but only at 3/4 to high. it still cranked and acted like it wonted to strt but wouldnt. waited for the tow for about 30-40 min and it started right up.it had been ideling a little rough and still is but seems to be fine now any idea what this is that made it just dye.

There was a recall at one time but not sure what years it covered. A lot of guys replace it and keep a spare in the glove box because it's so common.
