Turbo making a strange noise
I just changed the egr cooler and had the turbo sitting on my workbench for a week and a half. While I was puttin it back together I forgot to bolt down the oil feed for the turbo. It popped off while the engine was running and oil squirted out for 10-20 seconds while the motor was idling. Now I have it all back together. It sounds great at idle but when it gets past 1250rpms or so it starts whinning. The whinning goes up and down with the rpms and it goes away below 1250rpms or so. It doesn't feel like it's building up much boost but you can hear the pressure blow off as soon as you let off the gas pedal.
Could I have ruined the turbo when the oil line came off for that short period? It is an 04 6l with 150k miles. |

Turbos spin very fast, so it spun around quite a few times with no oil. You may have scarred the bearings. Take the intake off and feel the compressor wheel for play, up and down, and in and out. A little play side to side is normal, but any play in and out is not good.

Do you know if it's possible to have these turbos rebuilt or should I start looking for another turbo??

If a turbo goes bad on me, I just replace it with an upgraded one. Elite diesel rebuilds turbos with great success, and they do upgrades.
