Engine Will Not Turn Off

This is NON-PSD related (it is a diesel though)

We have an 83' Mercedes 300D (3.0L turbodiesel)

Here's the story, we were out running some erands this evening, everything was going fine, when we stopped at GoldRush to get a lil' gin and whiskey, the car would not turn off. When she turned the key all the electronics died (radio, dash lights, ect.) but that little diesel just kept chugging along. I messed with the key in the ignition for a bit but nothing happened. We locked the doors and let it run while we were in the store. When we came out I turned the key "off" and the engine shut right down, just like normal. Sweet!!! I thought.
We got home and the car turned off "normally" again. Sweet!!! A few min. later I went outside to shovel the snow from the driveway, which requires jockying the vehicles around a bit. When I got done the Benz wouldn't turn off again. I popped the hood and shut her down using the handy dandy "STOP" lever on the injection pump.

Any ideas as to what the heck is going on here????

probably have some kind of electronics problem, there should be some type of servo motor or somthing attached to the stop lever on the injector pump, maybee that went bad?

You should check if the CAT is red hot.
When my brother first got his Camaro Project car when we went to turn it off it wouldnt turn off, the cat was glowing red, and we had to sufficate the engine to turn it off. never found out the problem though cause we put a new motor in it.

No electronics, everything is vacuum controlled, even door locks.

No cat

Thanks for the quick reply guys

I've been diggin' into it for the last little bit. I am now determined it's a vacuum issue. All my (well her) hoses are attached, the rest of the vacuum system seems to be working fine, I think it might be a diaphram in the "shut off valve".

I just hope it's not an ignition switch problem (I don't think it is). I'd much rather deal with a vacuum system than that crazy electrical thing All those wires and what not

I don't know bubcus about a Mercedes. Had a similar problem years ago with a 6.2 chebby. Bad ground to the shutoff solenoid was the culprit. You may have a similar issue, but maybe with a vacuum solenoid.

Vacuum line is off somewhere. Those cars have a sea of vacuum lines under the hood!

Typical cummins owner.

if all the electronics shut off with the key it kept running. that says to me that fuel shut off isnt working. fuel solenoids are usually electric. should be on the injechion pump.

its something to do with the shut off switch on the pump... not working either electronically or vacume. same thing happened on my 8.3 cummins. turn the key off and everything would shut off except for the motor. ended up being the sylinoid on the pump

Vacuum !

Definitely a vacuum leak. They use vacuum to close the fuel system. Usually, it is a door lock actuator that starts to leak vacuum and then the engine will not shut off. Pull up the floor mats and start plugging the lines until you find where the leak is.
