No start 2004 6.0 Excursion

So, this issue was happening every once in a while, but now would not start at all tonight. It finally started after about 40 tries. When you start it, it is somewhat of a hard start, then idle way low and/or dies. When you try to give it a little excelerator, it does nothing. Even if you floor it, nothing. It is not just when cold or hot, has done it randomly. Glow plug light comes on, etc like it should; cranks strong, etc. Once it finally starts it runs great. Got home, tried it again and same thing. Is there something in the idle circuit that would cause this? Need help!

Any ideas?

Come on guys... MAN DOWN!

I normally can troubleshoot this stuff but haven't had the truck too long to get deep and too knowledgeable into it. With work, college, and 3 kids I could really use a hint or somewhere to start. She is parked for now... boooooooo.

Thank you so much for the ideas. It does start after about 30-40 tries, or randomly. I tried starting it yesterday morning before work and it would start but idle low and sputter and die. Then last night I tried it and it started right up, correctly, and had good throttle response. Then when you let it idle for 45 seconds or so it surged and stumbled a little bit.

I recently took my truck to the dealer for the same issue except mine idled high once it started. The problems they found that caused it was the glow plug module and a leak in the HPOP. Hope this helps you out.

Was the leak internal or external? Could you see it? Did your glow plug light still come on with the module bad?

The leak was internal I couldn't tell that it was leaking by looking at anything. The glow plug light would come on and off as it normally would. I'm not sure if there is a way of checking these issues yourself or not.

What about the ICP sensor? Could it be starting to go bad?

Where would be a good place to check voltage and/or pressure to see if the lpop or hpop is working correctly? What PSI?...
