Won't start again

HELP!

I've got a 96 F350 Powerstroke (very good condition).

Last week I started it up & went in to let it warm up. Came out & it was not running & WOULD NOT START. Spent about 2 days searching for problem, replaced cam pos sensor(threw code) & got nowhere. Finally it belched diesel out of filter housing while cranking, found a cracked filter cap seal & replaced, she started right up (weird??).

Well now I'm stuck in my mother inlaw's driveway and it did it again, went out and started it, walked away, came out 10min later to dead truck that will not start.

It's warm enough & did start once, so it's not the plugs.
It's producing exhaust, but catches only some times.
Truck shows no codes & based on last week the pcm, and all electrics are functioning.

ANY IDEAS ??????

soak a rag in gasoline and hold it near the intake and crank it... Just enough to give it a sniff. Will it start on that?
