Water Temp Spike and Engine Whine

I will confess up front that I am less than mechanically inclined. That said, my Powerstroke is doing two things that I do not know if they are related or not and if so what might be wrong. Today I noticed that the engine will change sounds and start to make a whine that sounds like there is a load on the engine but I am towing nothing. The whine comes and goes and seems more pronounced when accelerating. The other thing it did was the temperature gauge would spike near the red, stay there for 20 - 30 seconds and then quickly drop back to normal. No other signs of a high temperature. The truck is a 2005 and has approximately 100K miles on it. Anyone got a clue? Thanks.

Welcome to the ORG. Chances are the whine you are hearing is the fan clutch engaging and dis-engaging. It sounds like you have bad head gaskets. My brothers 04 did the exact same thing. The temp gauge would shoot up and hold until he let off the throttle and then it would back down. If its under 100k get it in right away and get it fixed under warranty.

+1 on the gaskets. Pop the hood and see if there is dried up coolant around the coolant reservoir.
