I am at a loss


Saturday I take my 2001 7.3 to the dealership to have the AC compressor and high pressure oil lines replaced.

It ran just fine the entire way back from the dealership to the house. When I got home, I popped the hood to check out the work and noticed that an electrical plug that comes from the (I'm assuming) high pressure oil header (just in front of the fuel filter) down to the water pump was not plugged back in, so I quickly make that connection.

Yesterday morning I fired it up for a quick trip to the store. It fired up, idled for about 5 or 10 seconds, then shut off. I fired it up again, same thing. 3rd time it ran, but when I was driving it just felt different - like it was hesitating coming from a complete stop. That was the only time I ran it yesterday.

This morning, I fire it up to head to work. It ran for about 10 seconds, then quit. Now it won't fire up at all. It's getting plenty of fuel, and up until a few minutes ago my batteries had plenty of charge.

I am completely lost as to what this could be. Any insight appreciated.

Have you tried unplugging that connector to see if it makes a difference?

Also, at your earliest convenience, I'd be calling the dealer. They did the work.

Just some thoughts.

I unplugged the connector - no difference. Still cranks, but no fire at all.

Now my batteries are pretty much dead. Tow truck is on the way to take it to the dealership.

Mondays suck.

Well, according to the mechanic I talked with, my batteries were kaput. No kidding, I told you that when I brought it in.

However, I have noticed that they weren't as strong lately as they have been, and apparently the dealer had to charge them on Saturday. They neglected to tell me this.

So I went and traded my battery in, and it fired right up. This seems very weird to me, because it was explained to me that the 7.3 is pretty sensitive to amp loss in batteries. If there is not enough juice left over after starting up to run some of the electrical system, it effectively shuts the engine down. This is backwards from everything I've been taught and experienced with diesels - basically if you got the engine running, you didn't need the electrical system.

I'm still not sure if I believe that was 100% of the problem, but it's all I have to go on right now. So if your batteries start going, switch them out sooner rather than later, because once they get to the point where they won't take a charge, you can't run you truck.
