Turbo failure?

Hey guys so I posted in the general discussion yesterday but figured I might get more info here. Department of the place i work has a e99 7.3 that they're gonna replace. I might try and buy it, but the turbo and boots are shot. All I really know is it's a xcab/sb 4x4, 133k. Been fleet maintained and got a full service and inspection 3k ago, since then the turbo went. Before taking a closer look, is there anything common that could cause the turbo to go? I'm just worried that anything at 133k would have caused some major damage elsewhere. Also, if it is just the turbo would it be worth it to do a d66, with plans for some tunes and maybe injectors later on? Sorry bout the double post and thanks for any help
