Looking at 99 F350, New to Diesels

First of all, this is a fantastic board with a LOT of information! Just what I'm looking for!

Just as the title states, I'm looking at a 99 F350 for $4800 that looks to be in decent condition online, however I have not seen it in person. I'm new to diesels and want to know what to look for when I finally go see the truck.

I'm not new to vehicles, I currently flip cars with mechanical problems. These can be anything from bad fuel pumps, water pumps to replacing head gaskets, and refurbing heads. So I'm no stranger to working on vehicles.

Yet I have no idea about diesels, and what to look for when purchasing them. I've been reading on here about the differences between the older and newer 99 model year differences and anything else I can find.

Any help will be appreciated!

Hi. There is a series of 4 videos on youtube about purchasing an older Powerstroke:

If you have experience with buying/selling cars, then much of this will be old news. This forum has a love/hate relationship with this guy, but I really like what he does. The very most important thing to me is how easily it starts. On a diesel, if a cold engine starts right up, then you can feel comfortable about not only the timing, fuel system and battery/starter, but most importantly the engine's compression. Just make sure the engine is truly cold when you check it out and not pre-warmed up by the seller.
