Questions on New to Me E99
Just bought a new to me 1999 F250 (mfg date 6/98.) It's an XL, regular cab, 4WD, 4 speed auto transmission, and 141,000 miles. We bought it to work around the house--hauling firewood, dirt, gravel, etc--and a camper (which we still need.)
The truck runs great. But there's a few issues: the spare tire doesn't want to come down, the cross members under the spare are rusting through in places, the shocks need replaced, there's some bed rust, and it had "VERY" sloppy steering. I wouldn't have bought it, but a buddy of mine said these are fairly minor issues for a 15 year old truck. Since the motor is strong, I worked the dealer down and bought it--we still need a camper, so our truck funding was under $10,000; got this one for $7350.
I think I fixed the steering issues last night by adjusting the steering box. There was 3-4 inches of play in the steering wheel, now there's about 1. It seems to have fixed the steering issues all together, but time will tell.
Here are my questions:
1. I want to check the differential fluids. I've read online that Fordn now recommends 75W140 in the front and the rear. I believe the front was originally filled with 75W90. Can I top both off with Royal Purple 75W140? (Specs on a vin search says "Non Limited Slip Rear Axle.")
2. How do I know if I tightened the steering gear box too much? With all the play, I almost have a full turn of the adjusting stud.
3. Does anyone know if I can get a replacement for the cross member under the spare? I found the winch online and plan on ordering a new one, but I'd like to replace that cross member as well.
Thanks so much for any help you can offer!!!
