not to hijack, I put the large filter on my early with a 3" 45deg pvc pipe elbow worked perfect, the only problem in my mind was that the elbow restricted down flow some so I went back a bought an adjustable 4" vent pipe like you would use on a dryer vent or flue pipe once I got it turned I marked it with a pencil and used electrical tape and wrapped the entire pc so that dust could not get in the adjustment seams took all of 5 minutes to do

A Superchips 1705 available to me at a very small cost. Anyone have any thoughts about putting that into an early 99? problems? worth even a small cost?

It may have come a long ways but it is still no where near the PMT1 tuning. In mid 2007, Jody did a ton of tweaking the tuning of my transmission, big oil and B code injectors when I had the XLE tuning. We just could not get it to all work together nicely. Now that I have PMT tuning and a late PCM, life is good.

Nope... IDM is fine...

If you can get the superchips cheap go for it... Its a good first step and works fine.

Those things are great for folks who want some power but don’t want to blow smoke and break things. But you still gotta have gauges!!!

I can't seem to find an answer to the question of problems using a Superchips 1705 with the early 99 PCM. anyone have any clue if there are issues? The more I think about it, the more $340 to DP Tuner sounds like the best route, then that just gets a new chip in there.

There are no problems running it with the early99 pcm. It will run just fine. Keep in mind what Froggy said: No matter what you run, you need gauges. I melted my first turbo with a superchips tuner.

I started moding my truck @ 195,000. 6637, exhaust, gauges, DP-Tuner in that order. A couple of mods since. It's never to late to start. IMO when you start modding you tend to pay more attention to other things with your truck. The more attention she receives the better she teats you, kinda like a lady !
