I think only some had that. I know a lot of guys around here that have early 99's and they are on the door. Mine is an early and mine is on the door

Mine is on the fender, looks like the triton V8 badge but says powerstroke in real small letters. Mine has nothing on the doors.

Mine was tagged on the door and I can assure you mine is an early99.

From what I can tell if it has the front fender badge then it is definitely an early 99 but if it has the door badges instead then it could be an e99 or a 99.5 either one.

Hey, I'm new to the forums, and I'm starting to read all these threads and gaining a ton of knowlege about the different Powerstoke 7.3's. Curious as to what model year my truck is, (Early vs. Late) I checked her out today and this is what I came up with:

- Build date on door of 12/98
- Motor Sticker is partially damaged, but I was able to get the 1999 Model year and the 250hp on the sticker, and my sticker is RED and has B250 in the top right corner.
- The VIN indicates a 1999 Model year
- I have the red striped door badges, but the truck has been painted, so I'm not sure of what it had originally.
- I have the larger ribbed turbo, and I didn't have a tape measure on me, but they look like 3" inlet tubes.

So I'm still on the fence about exact model, Early or Late 99. Any insight from you Powerstroke geniuses would be greatly appreciated. I gotta get an idea of what kind of mods I'll have to, if it is an early or not, or some kind of crossover. Thanks!

hmm looks like some have a early early 99 and a a late early 99. the 3" inlet tubes indicates that yours must be a 99.5 since the 99.5s had em with the bigger turbo.

A quick easy check (and something everyone should do anyways) is to remove the intake hoses that go from the turbo to the air box and inspect them for cracks or signs of dust. With them off you can see the turbo impeller clearly and you can see if it has the e99 style wicked wheel or the 99.5 style standard wheel. Of course there is also a chance that the wheel has been changed by a previous owner. Also I think you can count the bolts that holds the turbo together, the 99.5 has an extra bolt. If I remember right 12/98 is th final changeover date?

Here is what an e99 turbo looks like (this one has a little dust problem)
Notice it has 4 bolts and a stepped impeller

The early99 compressor housing has 4 bolts and does not have the reinforcing ribs on it like the 5 bolt late99 compressor housing.

Froggy, if you intended to include a pic in your post, it did not work.

My engine build date is Jan 7, 98. Pretty darn early. I spent hours on this thread last night, its awesome. Got the truck in May and just now ordered a TS 6 pos and a triple setof Autometer. It has a straight pipe and DIY intake, trying to determine if anything else has been done. It has had stacks at one point since there is big hole in the bed I found after taking out the tool box. Nice. Runs great with 234k on it.
