PCM confusion

I have read a pile of threads on here about swaping my e99 PCM for a 00-03 PCM. I have an automatic and 4 wheel drive F250. Am I understanding right, you can simply buy a PCM out of any old 7.3 between 00 and 03 and just plug it in to my truck and Im done? Or am I missing something?

I think you have to find one from a truck that is close to the same, (4x4 vs. 2wd; auto vs. 6 speed)... don't quote me 100% though I can build your bottom end, but when it comes to computers there's way more qualified than me on here, hopefully one of those guys can help...
