new turbo questions... D66?
So in my haste to brag to my friends how awesome my 7.3 is, leaving work today my turbo won't spool, at all, wont spin, I am just shy of 300k and have a stock turbo junkyard find in my garage... my question is what is so special about this D66 Turbo that is plastered all over these forums and will I see any advantages with a basically stock truck? So far my only modifications are a 6637 and a 4" straight exhaust, I don't have a tuner, or chip and may get one in the future, but i want to keep my fuel mileage and reliability of a near stock truck, moneys not a huge issue, but reliability is. Should I upgrade to the D66 or just get a rebuild replacement for my stock unit? The junkyard turbo wont be on for long, a new unit will be on my truck within a month, but which way should i go, and wheres a good place to source the parts?

if your not going to upgrade injectors and such you should be more than fine with a stock tubro. im running the stock garret with a chip,intake,exhaust,37's, and injectors in the near future... if they push my egt's to high ill go with the D66 to help lower egts
but if your egt's arent climbing i wouldn't |

If I go with a mild chip and with my exhaust mods what kind of power increase would I be looking at with a D66 vs. a stock replacement?

Ok, I have limited actual experience, but I have been searching for turbos lately and this is where I'm at:
If you want to stay stock, stay stock. Rebuild the original or get another. If money isn't an option AND you want to upgrade, here are the best options from MY research: GTP38R: Ball bearing (non-rebuildable) turbo and direct replacement, roughly $1400. Easiest replacement/upgrade. Add Bellowed Up pipes and you're looking at $1900. Borg/Warner S366: Rebuildable turbo with T4 style mounting system...you can get the entire kit (pedestal, up-pipes, down pipe, collector, intercooler pipe, boots AND Turbo) from Jake @ Irate for about $2k. When I upgrade, I'm going to the S366.

I agree with the others, if youre staying stock you can just go with a new stocker. but for not much more than s stocker, you can upgrade to the d66. the d66 flows 30%more air than stock which will lower your boost numbers your seeing now, but it will flow a ton more air and more air means less drive pressures, and more HP/TQ. the early 99 trucks only have one drop in replacement other than stock and thats a d66. with my dyno numbers, i am seeing only 23 psi with conservative tuning, and i get 19.5 MPG on the highway and 15-16 in town. 33s, and 3:73 gears, stage 2 injectors.

I got my d-66 from Beans Diesel. It handles my setup nice and pulls about 30lbs of boost on a hard pull.

does the d66 have a wastegate, or the backpressure valve on the exhaust? From what I have discovered that valve is a PITA to disconnect when removing the turbo, and not much better to reconnect... but the wastegate is something I wouldn't mind keeping... is it just a rebuild on the stock housing, or is it a completely different system, I sent an email to River City Turbo and if their price is right will more than likely be ordering one from them tomorrow. Should I order a chip as well or will I see benefits with just the turbo upgrade?
