Ok.....Sorry

Are you reffering to the 4" hose that looks like a 3" running from the air filter to the turbo? Not sure that 1" will change his answer much but thanks for pointing that out.

it will def be better to be pulling air from the filter vs a dry rotted opening.
I haven't gotten much surge outa mine towing, but haven't been up very many large hills.
just your basic I95 from pa to sc runs.

I have an Early 99 also (jan 99). When i opened up the intake with a DIY big filter and a 5" exhaust, I had turbo surge bad! I bought a wicked wheel and installed it , not knowing at the time they were supposed to come with one. Well it solved ALL my surge problems. And i know for a fact that it is the stock turbo. So id try that, You might be able to look at the fins of a stock impeller and then a WW to see if yours is in fact a stock WW. Kodi

Jan 99 is a late 99 or otherwise known as 99.5. You had the regular late compressor wheel and by installing the WW it should have and did fix your surging. An early will be dated 12-98 at the very latest. Mine is dated 12-98 and I know my suspension is an early 99 but I have a late 99 engine. Had the same surging issues you refer to and the WW fixed me up as well.

Learn something new everyday! How did you determine you have a 99.5 engine?

From the bad surging issues I was having. I took the intake hose off the turbo and took a pic of the wheel and the engine itself and the guys here pointed out the differences making it a 99.5. I was very suprised. The computer is a 99.5 so we found as well from my DP tuning but everything else is early 99.

Well, pretty sure mine is an early engine. I had the old style intake and the date on the truck is 10/98. I think the engine change was in 11/98 or 12/98. Not sure which. Im stumped as to what will fix it. I did make another trip up 77 this past weekend and didnt experience nearly as much surge. I barely had any, but also was a little lighter on this trip. Maybe the hose being split was a big probelm. IDK
