Diesel 7.2 worth it on an E350?

Hi guys... I've been lurking for about a week now on this forum. It's been my most recent stop in my research for the right van for my needs, and it's come to a point where I may need an experts thoughts on the matter.

After looking around for a couple months now, I've decided to get either a diesel E350 (looking for a 7.3L for reliability and mpg savings) or an E250 gasser. Everything about the diesel appeals to me in terms of reliability and mpg... I intend to care for the vehicle like it was my only child, and will have a suitable income to do preventative maintenance as needed.

One overlooked factor that I stumbled across today... finding a mechanic that works on diesel. I asked my local mechanic that I trust if he works on diesel engines... and that was a no. I asked who in the area does, and he said he knows no one at all. In a decent size area.

Is this common? Will I be able to find a diesel mechanic if my van breaks down an hour away from my shop? If so, my dreams of being a 7.3 powerstroke owner really flies out the window.

Sorry for the long post, and you guys have my thanks for your time... I've already learned quite a bit from this forum.

What area are you in? how mechanically inclined are you? the 7.3 is a very easy engine to work on and take care of yourself if you wanted too. My local mechanics will work on them, how ecer if your in a rural or farming area check with ag equipement repair shops, lots of them will work on them also.

Depends on the life it lived before.
IDI or turbo?
I've an IDI.
Once all systems are in good shape (starting, fuel) there isn't much to go wrong that's diesel specific.
But for a shade tree mechanic with big hands I found changing the gloplugs a pain. But then it's only the second time in 180K.

But on the bright side I've got an '88 E350 Maxivan with a custom raised roof that got about 15 to 16 mpg's over it's lifetime. And hauled a family of 5 ALL OVER in comfort w/ plenty of space.

And get's used to pickup 4x8 sheets of plywood with the custom bench seats folded down.
